After seven years, the next generation 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander has arrived, and with it, new looks and an impressive list of options.
A Thorough Reimagining
The Mitsubishi Outlander has long represented the most affordable entry point in the three-row crossover segment. As Mitsubishi’s first major release as part of the Nissan–Renault alliance, the new fourth-generation Outlander leverages that partnership to spice up its looks and options list. With the third generation knocking around since 2014, the updates to Mitsubishi’s flagship couldn’t have come too soon.
New Gen, New Looks
The new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is both bigger than the prior generation as well as being a good deal flashier, with a redesigned front end featuring bold headlights and copious amounts of chrome accenting. While the updates do give the Outlander a more modern appeal, the overall look is mostly in line with the rest of the segment, that is, generically SUV-like.
Dimensions expand in nearly every direction with the Outlander adding 1.5 inches in height, two inches in width, and .6 inches in length. The wheelbase also expands by 1.4 inches, which translates to an additional inch to both front and rear-seat legroom measurements. It’s likely the new Outlander shares the same platform with the Nissan Rogue.
The interior also receives a thorough reimagining with a much more upscale and modern design. Accent stitching abounds, complete with quilted pattering on the door panels and seats. The Nissan influence in evidence across much of the interior with likes the infotainment screen (8- or 9-inch options), the shifter, and most of the buttons all echoing the parts bins of the Rogue, Sentra, et al.
An Embarrassment of Options
A major upside to the being part of the Nissan-Renault family is the availability of a host of upscale options for the new Outlander. In addition to the fairly standard size infotainment touchscreen, there’s options for a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless phone charging, and a BOSE stereo system. Mitsubishi wasn’t done there either. They also added other amenities like optional rear heated seats, a 10.8-inch heads-up display, 20-inch wheels, and panoramic sunroof. There’s even advanced safety tech like adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist.
Powertrain and Price
The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander drops it’s V6 in favor of a more efficient 2.5L 4-clyinder engine putting out a serviceable, but uninspiring 181 horsepower and 181lb.-ft. of torque. This mill is paired with a CVT and comes in either front-wheel or all-wheel drive versions. The latter Mitsubishi bills as “rally-derived Super All-Wheel Control,” which at least sounds cool. The FWD version will reportedly offer five different drive modes while the AWD version will have options for six drive modes. You can expect the Outlander to net a comparable degree of efficiency to that of the Nissan Rogue, somewhere around 29 mpg combined.
All in all, the Outlander doesn’t reinvent the game or itself, but it does make significant strides to dispelling its “entry-level” status while still maintaining its segment-best affordability. Mitsubishi says the new 2022 Outlander will start at just $25,795. Which, among three-row crossovers, means it’s still a leader when it comes to the seats per dollar equation.
The all-new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is scheduled to go on sale in April of this year.
