Sally Rides Again

You might remember Sally Carrera, the blue Porsche from the movie Cars, as the owner the Cozy Cone Motel, Radiator Spring’s town lawyer, and Lightning McQueen’s love interest. What you may not recall is this year is the 20th-anniversary of the original 996-generation 911 on which she was based. To celebrate this anniversary, Porsche has teamed up with the movie’s production designer Bob Pauly, and Cars’s creative director Jay Ward. Together, they’ve designed a unique, one-off 922-generation 911 based on Salley Carrera that captures the spirit of the character in more ways than one.

Like Salley Carrera, who was dedicated to helping her community, the project’s ultimate goal is to benefit others. The one-of-kind car will be auctioned off by RM Sotheby’s with all proceeds divided between Girls, Inc a charity that supports young girls’ education programs and to the USA for UNHCR (the UN Refugee Agency) to help those displaced by the conflict in Ukraine. President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America, Kjell Gruner says, “Like Sally, (the car’s) purpose is to help others and that makes it extra special.”

And this isn’t the only recent charitable move from Porsche. The company has also made a separate $1 million Euro donation to Ukrainian relief efforts.

The new Salley Carrera 2.0 does indeed update things from the 996 generation to the 992 generations, but the new car carries over and even builds on the original character. The concept art for the car, especially Bob Pauly’s contributions, hint at intriguing details including Sally’s pinstriping tattoo located on the wing, interior accenting that matched the exterior “Sally Blue,” and an updated version of the original’s Turbo Twist wheels.

Notably, the Sally Blue paint job was a color created by Pixar for the movie since the early-aughts 996’s blues paint offerings were too dark for the positive energy of Sally Carrera. The color will also extend to the car’s contrast stitching and interior accenting, as well.

But that’s not all we can divine from the concept art, either. There will also be custom baggage, a physical map to Radiator Springs, a special manual, tool kit, and a making of portfolio and sketchbook. And to top things off, Porsche Design is creating a unique custom timepiece with design elements directly echoing those of the car.

The current Porsche 911 Carrera features a twin-turbo 3.0L flat-six making between 379 and 473 horsepower, depending on how it’s configured. Exact details on what will power the new Sally Carrera haven’t been released, but we can assume Sally Carrera 2.0 will capture spirit of joy and speed as the character on which it’s based.
