We’ve seen a shift towards more compact, fuel-efficient vehicles or even fully electric options coming to dealerships. Nearly every automotive brand has some sort of electric vehicle (EV) in their lineup or one coming soon, that is except for Ram. The truck brand has been pretty quiet about their lineup changes while the rest of the Stellantis family has been showing off all of their electric concepts and sending some big-name models to the chopping block. That’s all about to change though as Ram is set to reveal their fully electric truck concept sometime this fall. Not only that, but there have also been murmurs of the hefty truck manufacturer bringing in some smaller options to compete with the likes of Ford and Hyundai. Here’s what we know about Ram’s upcoming electric revolution and what other models we could possibly see added to their lineup in the near future.

Ram Electric Truck Coming This Fall

Ram waited until their competition had revealed their hand before unveiling their electric truck plans. GMC kicked things off with the Hummer EV, Ford punched back with the F-150 Lighting, Chevrolet unveiled their Silverado EV, and the newcomer Rivian has their R1T out in the market. Ram is poised in such a way that they can take all of those competitors’ performance specs, ranges, charging times, capabilities, and designs to utilize as a benchmark for their own electric offering.

We’ve already gotten a look at some of the upcoming concept’s silhouette, the front and rear lighting designs, as well as the EV frame that the Ram truck will ride on. From what we can see, this is going to be a more aerodynamic looking Ram 1500 that takes on some cyberpunk exterior designs. That aggressive design language also lends itself to the new Ram Revolution logo. Sharper corners and no ram’s head in sight, possibly to help differentiate the EV truck from the already established combustion models.

Ram has been listening to its fan group when it comes to the creation of this electric truck. While there were some mentions of wanting it to look cool, the largest requests were for making a long range, fast charging, and all-around capable truck. Underneath the skin of this Ram concept is the STLA Frame EV platform that could help in meeting those requests. The STLA Frame can support battery packs of up to 101-118 kWh which can allow for a driving range of up to 500 miles. The Ram concept could come in one of two ways when it debuts. The first is the long-range model that aims at making the truck a decent daily featuring two rear mounted electric motors and an over 400-mile range to beat the competition.

The other option could essentially be a Ram TRX-EV variant that features all the bells and whistles. Quad motors for peak power and torque, a ludicrous 0-60 time, a bevy of off-road technologies, and a sweet exterior package. If Ram is able to offer something like this second option AND provide a high driving range, then they’ll pretty much seal the deal when it comes to the electric truck conversation.

Small Ram Trucks Rumored

There have been rumors circulating around the automotive news world that Ram could be looking at bringing in smaller sized trucks. With the emergence of compact trucks like the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz plus the void of a mid-size offering in Ram’s lineup, it makes sense. We haven’t seen a pickup smaller than the 1500 from Ram since the Dakota – and that was back when it was still a part of Dodge. With Stellantis pushing into more fuel-efficient vehicles, it makes sense that Ram would see a resurgence in the smaller pickup truck classes. Here are two ways Ram could approach these empty spots in their lineup.

Ram 700

A compact truck from Ram already technically exists, just not in the United States. The Ram 700 is a 4-door compact truck that’s sold internationally. At the high end of the Ram 700 trim levels, the exterior design looks pretty trendy and really speaks to a younger, more adventurous demographic of shoppers. Meanwhile, at the base trims the Ram 700 acts as a light duty option made perfect for delivery runs or as a cheap work truck offering.

The 1.3L inline-four engine under the Ram 700’s hood is a little underpowered for the American audience at only 98 horsepower and 94 lb-ft of torque, but it could benefit from the powertrains being offered in the upcoming Dodge Hornet or even the 3.6L V6 from the Chrysler Pacifica should it come to the states. Payload capacity is limited to about 1,500 lbs, which is close to on par with base level competitors. The Ram 700 is right there and waiting, Ram just needs to flip the switch and adhere to some US government regulations to bring it to our market.

Ram Dakota

We haven’t heard from the Dakota name for a while now, but this may be the time to see the old nameplate make a return. A mid-size Ram Dakota could be the perfect platform to introduce the first ever plug-in hybrid truck. I know, that sounds surprising that a PHEV truck hasn’t come to market yet, but the opportunity is just sitting there for one of these brands to scoop it up. Throw in some Jeep 4xe underpinnings, slap it on the Gladiator’s frame, and give it a nice little box with the Rambox cargo management solution. It may not be as brawny as the Ram 1500, but it’d make for a nice alternative in today’s pickup truck market.
