It’s set to be released later in 2022, but for several months now Honda has been dropping little bits of information on the latest Civic Type R prototype. There are still a lot of details we’re waiting to find out, from trims to interior features, but we’re starting to get a big picture look at the popular hatchback. On July 20, the camouflage finally comes off of the car, so we’ll get an even better look at the latest Civic Type R. Below is everything we know about the vehicle so far. Take a look!

Developers have been working on the next-generation 2023 Honda Civic Type R prototype for a while now and they’ve been testing the capacity of the vehicle every step of the way. In April, it was driven on the Suzuka Circuit in Japan. That track is the home to the Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix. While on the track the 2023 mode set a new front-wheel drive track record, completing the 3.6-mile figure-8 track with a lap time of 2 minutes and 23.120 seconds. This beat out the record previously held by the 2021 Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition.

Honda Civic designers have also been testing the 2023 Civic Type R prototype on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Recently the prototype took laps around the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course before the Honda Indy 200. This was the first time the prototype has been seen in action on U.S. soil.

What to Expect

Even when wrapped, there are some obvious standout exterior features on the 2023 Civic Type R. Its distinct rear wing can’t be camouflaged. It’s easy to see that the lower grille is much bigger and wider than before, too. It looks like there are even going to be triple tailpipes on this Civic Type R. The overall look appears to be more mature and more subtle than before.

We’ll have to wait for complete production specs on the 2023 Honda Civic Type R, but we do know a few things for certain. This Type R won’t have a new chassis. Instead, Honda plans to improve the Civic Type R. There is speculation that the 2023 version will have more power than the current version which makes 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. It will have a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, but will have more power. Honda said the Civic Type R with the highest capability will have a standard manual transmission.

The 12th generation Honda Civic Type R is expected to start at just under $40,000. If everything sticks to schedule, the 2023 Honda Civic Type R hit sales room floors in late 2022. Honda seems to have a pretty regimented release plan. As we mentioned above, the camouflage comes off on July 20!
