Mercedes’ EV Money Maker

Mercedes-Benz has recently added several vehicles to its EQ line of EVs, including the flagship EQS sedan and SUV, the EQB electric crossover, and EQE sedan. From a sales perspective however, the most important of Mercedes’ EV entrant is just around the corner, the upcoming EQE SUV.

The mid-level EQE SUV has its analogues in the EQE sedan and the gas-powered GLE crossover. The E-Class has long been something of a sweet spot in the Mercedes-Benz lineup, just opulent enough while still carrying a somewhat reasonable price tag.

The EQE SUV looks to provide exactly that signature mix of powerful drivetrains, innovative technologies, and an opulently appointed cabin. That the EQE SUV will offer the first-ever all-electric AMG version further spices things up for the EQE SUV. That should help the EQE SUV content with segment leaders like the Tesla Model Y, BMW iX, and Audi e-tron.

Specs

Mercedes has yet to release detailed numbers, but we do know the EQE SUV will come in four basic flavors. First up are the EQE 350+ and EQE 350 4Matic. These two trims will offer 288 horsepower and 417 lb-ft of torque, with the latter version coming with all-wheel drive. The EQE 500 ups the output considerably to 536 horsepower and 636 lb-ft of torque. Performance options will include an air-suspension and up to 10 degrees of rear-wheel steering.

Fully electric drivetrains have been pushing the limits of performance (and human reaction time) for a while now. With everyone from Porsche to Tesla making the most of instant electric torque, it was only a matter of time before AMG, Mercedes’ performance division, got in on the game.

The EQE 53 AMG SUV will deliver between 617 and 677 horsepower with that latter number will come curtesy of the Dynamic Plus package and allow the EQE 53 AMG to bolt from zero to sixty in just 3.3 seconds. Performance features will include a sport-tuned suspension, active roll stabilization, and upgraded brakes as well as your choice of 21- or 22-inch wheels.

The EQE SUV will carry a 90.6-kWh battery pack and offer an estimated range of 342 miles, a nudge more than the 330-mile range of the Tesla Model Y. Mercedes says the EQE SUV will charge from 10 to 80 percent of capacity in 32 minutes when using DC Level 2 charging.

Posh and Sophisticated Interior

The EQE SUV’s interior owes much to that of the larger EQS. The sophisticated cabin is replete with leather surfaces, wood accenting, and loads of ambient lighting. The EQS’s signature dashboard-encompassing Hyperscreen is here too and covers a 12.3-inch digital gauge display, 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, and a third screen positioned in front of the front seat passenger. The graphics and response time of the infotainment system are impressive, but, as in the EQS, the Hyperscreen houses everything, meaning no actual buttons for HVAC and stereo controls.

Aside from this quibble, the interior space of the EQE SUV looks to deliver comfort, quiet, and dazzling levels of modern tech to buyers. Like Tesla and other EV makers, Mercedes will offer over-the-air updates to add features as you go. Many of these involve infotainment features like mini-games, unique animations, and signature soundscapes.
