Sneak Peek: Next-Gen 2023 Lexus RX

The next-generation 2023 Lexus RX remains a strong competitor with new powertrains and improved curb appeal.

New Grille, Same Relaxing Ride

The Lexus RX is getting a generational overhaul for the 2023 model year, with a fresh look, new powertrains, while retaining the same refined and relaxed character that has distinguished it across four prior generations. In classic Toyota/Lexus fashion, the new RX makes incremental but important steps forward.

The RX jumps to a new platform for 2023, and with it comes a wider, longer wheelbase, despite the RX retaining the same overall footprint. This change grants both greater stability on the road and a nudge in interior space, mostly enjoyed by rear passengers.

The RX gets a visual overhaul as well. Lexus’ polarizing spindle grille has been given a makeover. The innovative design integrates or melds the grille (still massive) with the surrounding body, sans boarder or frame. The new larger headlights and updated taillights (these echoing those of the Lexus NX) further differentiate new from old. New bodylines and creases blend the sensuous and assertive that should help the RX stand out a little more against the competition. Helping in that effort is a new head-turning color option for the RX dubbed Copper Crest.

Powertrains

The 2023 Lexus RX offers a host of new powertrain options that should serve most, if not all, prospective buyers. Things start out with the RX 350 and its 2.4L turbocharged four-cylinder making 275 horsepower. This comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission and either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. The hybrid RX 350h combines a 2.4L with three electric motors offering 246 horsepower and a combined 35 mpg rating.

The sportiest version will be the RX 500h, another hybrid with the 2.4L turbo and two electric motors good for 367 horsepower. Lexus says the RX 500h will scoot from zero to sixty in 5.9 seconds and get a combined 27 mpg. There are also plans for an RX 450h+ with a plug-in hybrid powertrain borrowed from the Toyota RAV4 Prime and Lexus NX 450h+. While this one will not be ready at launch but might be worth the wait as the RX 450h+ should have around 300 horsepower and an electric-only driving range of around 40 miles.

F Sport Performance version of the RX 500h adds performance goodies like upgraded brakes, adaptive suspension, and Dynamic Rear Steering. While the RX 500h F Sport will not outperform the best from Porsche or BMW, these additions should help the RX feel sportier than usual.

Interior Updates

Lexus did not stop at mechanical and exterior updates for the RX. The interior of the new 2023 RX is also being thoroughly revamped. Lexus interiors have long leaned on quality and refinement over pyrotechnics. But like their best interiors, like say that of the current Lexus LC 500, the new RX gets a good mix of both. Finely stitched leather and open-pore wood trim are augmented by new ambient lighting and an elegant, simplified re-imagination of the RX’s prior cabin space.

The central infotainment screen starts out at 9.8 inches with a dash dominating 14-inch touchscreen optional. This is complemented by a smaller 7.0-inch digital gauge cluster. A Mark Levinson premium stereo and navigation are among the high-end tech options. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will come standard.

Like the rest of Toyota/Lexus’ offerings, the new RX is exceedingly generous with standard safety and driver assistance features. The RX comes standard with the Lexus Safety Sense 3.0 which covers a wide assortment of safety tech like lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian/cyclist detection.

Of course, the classic RX character has been retained for this new fifth generation. On the road, the RX excels at destressing its driver and occupants with a smooth and composed ride and a quiet and serene cabin. The added rear passenger space is welcomed, accomplished by a reduction to the rear overhang.

Lexus has yet to release pricing for the new RX, but the 2022 model starts at around $47,000, so we expect the 2023 model to come in just a nudge higher.

The new 2023 Lexus RX remembers what it does right while improving on its weaknesses. Its mix of comfort, reliability, and affordability should allow the new RX to punch above its weight in the highly competitive luxury crossover segment.
