Check out our coverage of the Dare Forward 2030 plan that promises to transform Stellantis cars, trucks & SUVs into a carbon-neutral, global EV powerhouse.
Stellantis, the parent company to 14 automotive brands, has been on a tear since formation in January 2021. Combining the collective vehicle might of Fiat Chrysler and PSA Peugeot, Stellantis cars come from the likes of Chrysler, Peugeot, Fiat and Alfa Romeo with Jeep, Dodge and RAM highlighting the truck and SUV segments. While a global conglomeration on this scale sounds like a recipe for making changes at a glacial pace, CEO Carlos Tavares appears to be committed to moving much faster. In fact, Stellantis plans to effectively transform their giant car company into a wholly new enterprise, a “sustainable mobility tech company” in the parlance of their press releases.
Based on the flurry of announcements, acquisitions and activity over the last 18 months, there is substance behind these statements. The latest happened yesterday when Stellantis laid out their Dare Forward 2030 strategy. It is a bold plan with a host of specific targets detailing the journey to sell 100% electric vehicles in Europe by the end of this decade. As the CEO put it, “We are expanding our vision, breaking the limits and embracing a new mindset, one that seeks to transform all facets of mobility for the betterment of our families, communities and the societies in which we operate.”
On the vehicle front, Stellantis is planning over 100 product launches by the end of this decade. That includes more than 75 battery electric vehicles (BEV) responsible for sales of some 5 million units. It will encompass the entire portfolio of Stellantis cars, trucks, SUVs, minivans like the Chrysler Pacifica that we review here, and commercial vehicles. You can check out our sneak peek of the Chrysler Airflow EV here to get a feel for what’s coming.
Kicking things off, the company shared a sketch of the first 100% electric Jeep that looks to be on the scale of their Compass crossover. A true off-road BEV is expected to follow which will be an exciting addition to Jeep lineup favorites like the 2022 Jeep Gladiator, a review of which you can see here. The 2024 RAM 1500 BEV, which builds on the 2022 RAM 1500 that we review here, was also teased.
Stellantis is aiming to sell 100% BEVs in Europe and 50% in the United States by 2030 while simultaneously doubling net revenues to €300 billion. They also intend to increase new revenues from the premium and luxury segments fourfold. This all builds on the automakers’ previously shared EV strategy of launching four new EV platforms that we discuss here. Another aspect to the vehicle plan is a stated target of 2024 for Level 3 driving automation, which allows for hands-free/eyes-off driving via partnership with BMW.
Along with electrification, Stellantis will be expanding their hydrogen fuel cell segment to large vans and heavy-duty pickups, targeting sales of 10,000 units in just two years. This extreme turn away from fossil fuel power is required to hit Stellantis’ target of total carbon neutrality by 2038 with a 50% reduction by 2030. The company notes they are committed to becoming an “industry champion in the fight against climate change” by leading the way on decarbonization and creating a sustainable future.
To assist on this environmental stewardship end, the automakers’ “cradle-to-cradle” production process going forward will extend the life of vehicle components fourfold and increase recycling tenfold. This is a seriously ambitious plan requiring a mammoth effort from the company and its employees. As part of the Dare Forward 2030 presentation, Stellantis highlighted the global diversity of their workforce, plans to have women holding 35% of leadership roles and a hiring spree to bring their software-related positions up to 4,500 by the end of 2024. This will be critical to reach the company goal of completing one third of vehicle sales online by 2030.
Stellantis describes their plan as a “blueprint for cutting-edge freedom of mobility” that outlines how their workforce will “engineer the new era of mobility with audacity, taking bold steps every day with an entrepreneurial spirit to exceed customer expectations.” Based on the depth of what Stellantis has shared thus far, it looks like they are serious about this transformation.
