In 1969, the Ford Mustang reached a highwater mark for that first generation (the more nostalgic among you might argue for the Mustang writ large). In a short four-year interval, the Mustang had evolved from a six-cylinder “secretary’s car” to the potent and influential force in a newly forged sports car segment, the pony car. The 1969 Mustang offered six performance variants ranging from the GT to the Boss 302 and 429 to the Shelby GT350 and top-of-the-heap Shelby GT500, right in the middle was the Mach 1, perfectly blending power and style for one of the most beloved Mustangs of all time.

In light of this, our Cool Car Find today is a vintage 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 in Acapulco Blue.

The Mach 1 trim was a new offering for 1969 and took the “SportsRoof” fastback body style in an ever-bolder direction. In addition to its sloping roofline, the Mach 1 added a blacked-out hood, racing stripes, a chin spoiler up front, hood pins, and a faux hood scoop. Additional options included rear wing and rear window louvers.

The Mach 1 came standard with the then new 351 Winsor V8 with two-barrel carb making 250 horsepower. A higher compression version of the 351, the “M-code” added a four-barrel carb for 290 horsepower. Sitting mid pack was a 390 cu.-in. V8 equipped with a four-barrel carb and good for 320 horsepower. Top of the options list was the 429 Cobra Jet, with or without optional Ram Air. The 429 Cobra Jet and “drag pack” optional Super Cobra Jet were rated to 335 horsepower and 440 lb.-ft. of torque. The Mach 1 came standard with a three-speed manual, but four-speed manual and three-speed automatic transmissions were also available.

Ford sold an impressive 72,458 Mach 1 Mustangs in 1969. The trim remained largely unchanged for 1970, albeit with a swap from the Winsor 351 V8 to Ford’s Cleveland 351 V8. The Mustang received a major mid-cycle refresh for the 1971 model year that included a major visual overhaul.

Our Cool Car Find is a 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1. This example is a stunner, with Acapulco Blue paint, black racing stripes, and a white vinyl interior. The options boxes were indeed ticked for the optional rear wing and side louvers. The original 351 V8 has been replaced with a new tuned 351 netting a claimed 400 horsepower and paired with the optional four-speed manual transmission. The seller notes the original numbers-matching engine is also part of the deal. The car has been painstakingly restored and comes with just 17,680 miles on the odometer. It does not get much better looking for late ‘60s Mustangs than this pristine Mach 1.
