Michael Jordan: The Greatest of All Time

The world of sports has a number of different greats whose names will be echoed for years well past their time. You’ve got big names like Tom Brady, Lebron James, Babe Ruth, Michael Schumacher, Wayne Gretzky, and so many more that have etched their names in the history books. However, there is one player that seems to rise well above the rest in terms of success and notoriety. You may have heard of him – Michael Jordan.

MJ is an NBA legend that was a threat on the court and couldn’t be stopped during his rise to fame. Jordan’s accolades include being a ten-time NBA Scoring Leader, ten-time All-NBA First Team selection, five-time NBA MVP, six-time NBA Finals MVP, two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, and a six-time NBA Champion. His championship wins are crazy to think about since he was able to go on a back-to-back-to-back championship run from ‘91 to 93 with the Chicago Bulls. Jordan then decided to retire to play some Minor League Baseball and do a little acting in the Space Jam movie. Then the guy came back to the NBA in ‘95 only to have another three-peat with the Bulls.

Not only was Jordan a dominant force in the world of basketball, but he’s also a pop-culture icon. Jordan helped sensationalize the NBA and made a lasting impact on the shoe world. It all started with an endorsement with Nike that brought about those black and red Air Jordan basketball shoes that were embroiled in NBA controversy. Sales for Jordan’s line of shoes skyrocketed throughout his career and sneakerheads all over the world are still clamoring to get their hands on the latest pairs of Air Jordans.

Not only are Michael Jordan’s brand of shoes highly sought after, but any piece of memorabilia comes with a significant price tag that fans are willing to front the cash for. Game-worn Nike sneakers selling for over $1,000,000, his 1986 Fleer Rookie Card going for well over $2,000,000, and even his ‘Last Dance’ jersey recently went for an incredible $10.1 million. Those are some pretty spendy collectibles, but there’s one piece of Michael Jordan memorabilia that’s going for significantly less while holding a closer connection to the basketball star. Let’s check out Michael Jordan’s previously owned 1996 Mercedes-Benz S600 Lorinser that’s listed for sale on Carsforsale.com!

Back in December 23rd of 1995, Michael Jordan and his then wife Juanita purchased a brand-new Mercedes-Benz S-Class coupe. Why do I know this specific date for a car purchase? Well, the listing provides us with an image of the original title that not only has Jordan’s name but also features his well-known signature on the back. This date of purchase coincides with this return to the NBA that The Last Dance documentary covers. Eagle-eyed viewers may have actually noticed this very car briefly depicted in the ESPN docuseries.

MJ didn’t just spring for your run-of-the-mill Mercedes-Benz, he chose a Lorinser modified edition of the S600. The German based tuning company added on a special made widebody kit, rear spoiler, square dual-tip exhaust, unique 20-inch Lorinser chrome wheels, and it was finished with a nice deep navy-blue metallic paintjob. This thing is definitely a lot flashier than any other S600 out there on the road still.

Moving inside, the S600 acts as the lap of luxury – at least in terms of ‘90s technology and design that is. Two-tone grey leather upholstery, wood trimming all around, heated seats, automatic climate control, power mirrors, power seats, power sunroof, and Alpine car audio. There’s even a built-in phone that still has “JORDAN” programed into the digital display when powered on.

This thing must have been Michael Jordan’s daily driver, because he supposedly put over 150,000 miles on the odometer before moving on from it in 2003. You’d utilize this Mercedes as a daily driver too if your garage was full of Corvettes, Ferraris, and Aston Martins like MJ’s does. Under the hood of this S600 is a M120 6.0L V12 engine that was rated at 389 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. Mated to the engine is a five-speed automatic transmission that directs power to the rear wheels. You’ll hear this V12 coupe coming thanks to the impressive exhaust note achieved through the pipes installed by Lorinser.

The S600 isn’t focused on being a straight-line speedster though, it also came with some nice handling additions. The four-wheel disc brakes are nice for stopping power while the hydropneumatic adaptive damping system (ADS) works in association with the independent suspension to offer a nice ride. The advanced ADS adjusts the damping level of the shock absorbers to help soften bumps, stabilize the car, and even features self-leveling functionality. Jordan could have sped around Chicagoland Speedway at high speed in this thing and it would have felt like a leisurely cruise.

Michael Jordan’s 1996 Mercedes-Benz S600 Lorinser previously “sold” at auction for $202,200 back in August of 2020, but the bidder fell through on finalizing the purchase. The Beverly Hills Car Club still has the car in their possession and has listed this once in a lifetime piece of Michael Jordan memorabilia for an asking price of $135,000 on Carsforsale.com. That’s chump change compared to the going rates for some of the other collector’s items associated with the Jordan name. There’s no denying that this car is a wonderful conversation piece and it could be yours if you’ve got the cash ready.
